The Watering was constructed in the 19th century by the Belgian state to irrigate the poor sandy soils of the Campine region. The ingenious irrigation system, called "witteren" and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, provided fertile grassland, where hay was grown for livestock. The Watering is therefore a silent witness to the rich agricultural history of the Kempen region.
A source of biodiversity
The Watering is home to an incredible diversity of plants and animals and counts more than 350 different plant species and 120 bird species. As such, the watering meadows are an important nature reserve and a hotspot for biodiversity.
Wateringhouse
The Watering House contains exhibits on the origins and management of "The Flow Meadows" in the Watering and on its rich fauna and flora. The irrigation system is vividly presented on a model.
