Tips from actress Katrien De Ruysscher

About ten years ago, actress Katrien De Ruysscher, known from 'Thuis', among others, moved to Lommel with her family. In this blog, she shares her favourite spots in Lommel.

Beautiful nature with forests, sandy plains and flowing meadows. A fine city centre where it is pleasant to shop at the local shops, and where you can have a nice meal and a drink. And a glass museum where you can make your own glass artwork... Lommel has it. Actress Katrien De Ruysscher, known among other things as Judith Van Santen in Thuis, moved from the city to Lommel with her family about ten years ago.

"The peace and quiet and the space are priceless. The forest is my backyard, where I go walking and jogging. At the same time, we can enjoy culture in Lommel. Or we head to the centre to have a look at the GlazenHuis studio, a great asset to Lommel, and go for something to eat or drink. I like living here."

One of the great assets of the city of Lommel is its beautiful nature.

"The flowing meadows of the Grote Watering, a remnant of an irrigation project from the 19th century, are a phenomenon. You can still see at certain times how they irrigate the meadows according to an old method. Impressive," says Katrien. Another piece of special nature is 'cycling through the trees' in Bosland. "By creating extra experiences in nature, Limburg puts nature more in the spotlight. I find that special. It also makes a bike ride extra fun for the children."

A brisk hike makes you hungry and thirsty.

"For a good coffee, I go to Wolf Espressobar, a cosy coffee bar in the city centre where they also serve delicious cake. Another topper is BaZiel, an experience bar with an extensive menu from lunch to healthy smoothies and cocktails. Everything on the menu there is just that little bit different," says Katrien. It is these unique things that make a visit to Lommel more than worthwhile. Gifts, flowers and interior stuff Katrien buys at Ixora. "Once started as an ordinary flower shop, but since a thorough renovation, Ixora also sells cool interior stuff, from pretty bowls to everything for the Christmas tree."

After all that shopping, it's time for a break.

When it's time for lunch or dinner, Katrien likes to visit Restaurant Diana. "A simple, classic establishment, but they serve the best mussels there. The cold dishes and stew are also top notch there. When the kids get to choose, we go to La Cantina for Fajitas." If it can be a bit more, or if you have something to celebrate, the two-star restaurant Cuchara comes highly recommended. "Cooking is an art in itself. The aesthetic plates served by chef Jan are top-notch. An experience I can really enjoy."
