Renovation Visit Lommel

This autumn, the renovation of Tourism Lommel and the adjacent GlazenHuis will begin. As of October 1, 2024, the tourist reception has moved to the temporary location at Kerkstraat 54. This renovation will further highlight the story of sand and glass in Lommel, with the glass workshop as the main attraction. The tourist and museum reception will be elevated to a higher level.

Temporary move to Kerkstraat 54

As of October 1, 2024, the tourist reception has moved to the temporary location at Kerkstraat 54 with revised opening hours. You can visit from Tuesday to Sunday between 10:00 and 12:30, and from 13:00 to 17:00. Monday is now a fixed closing day. The former site of Visit Lommel and GlazenHuis will remain closed for the entire renovation period.

Iconic glass building repurposed

The monolithic building contrasts with the existing iconic glass building, which will be repurposed to serve as a tourist and museum reception.

The Aerts House will be detached and restored as a standalone historical building. This will create a direct and visible access to the welcoming reception. Thanks to the openness of the site, it will also be accessible via the rear through the passage ‘De Vryheyt’.

Facades of compressed Lommel sand

The facades will be compressed layer by layer with real Lommel sand, revealing the underground geology above ground. The previously fragmented site will thus be transformed into a visually coherent whole.

In addition to making an architectural statement, the new site also aims to be an example of sustainability. The old gas ovens in the glass workshop will be replaced by energy-efficient electric models. Additionally, solar panels will generate energy, while heat pumps are responsible for heating and cooling the buildings.

GlazenHuis as a cultural hotspot

To further strengthen GlazenHuis’ leading position, GlazenHuis is focusing on expansion and professionalization. The entire site will continue to develop into a cultural hotspot.

The artisanal glass workshop will be housed in a brand-new monolithic building on the village square, giving it the prominent place it deserves. While passers-by can discover the workshop from the street, visitors will be able to watch the glassblowers at work from a centrally located, intimate grandstand.

Increasing Lommel's appeal

The new cultural hotspot will not only increase the appeal of the village square but also drive more visitors to Lommel. "With this major renovation, we aim to position Lommel as a key cultural destination.
