City Center of Lommel

Continue your route past the old Town Hall and reach the Sint-Pietersbanden Church. This 1900 church is known for its unique stained-glass windows, furniture in a cohesive style, a valuable Clerinx organ, a carillon, and murals. Take a break on the charming terrace of the Torenhuis, located on the atmospheric church square, where you can also admire various artworks that invite reflection.

Architecture in Nature

The route continues to Crematorium Stuifduin, renowned for its modern architecture and bike café. Nearby is the 12-hectare municipal cemetery, which was awarded the title of Warmest Cemetery in Flanders—a special place for a moment of reflection during your journey.

Stories from the Wartime Past

Next, ride to the historic Joe's Bridge. This bridge played a crucial role during World War II, especially in Operation Market Garden. For a hearty meal, stop by Den Brugwachter, located at the foot of the bridge. The wartime past comes to life at the next stop: the Polish Military Cemetery. This 1-hectare cemetery is the final resting place of 257 Polish soldiers who fell during the liberation of Belgium in 1944.

A bit further along, you’ll pass by Crèmelien, a delicious ice cream shop, and the delightful brasserie De Vijf Linden, before arriving at the 18th-century Leyssens Mill. This grain mill is a protected monument in an idyllic green location. A little further in Kattenbos, amidst a forested area, you’ll find the German War Cemetery, the largest WWII cemetery in Western Europe, spanning 16 hectares.
