Crematorium Stuifduin lies like a ruin in the surrounding landscape. Dusty sand dunes and pine trees on the grounds refer to the moorland and mining forests that characterize the Kempen landscape. The complex consists of open, semi-open and closed spaces, where visitors are made aware of nature and the landscape.
Spaces for farewell, cremation and catering are grouped around a garden room, where nature enters the building.
The architects used earthy materials, with great attention to craftsmanship and detail. They combine concrete with rough masonry and bricks from a ring furnace in Maaseik.
The foundation stone of "Stuifduin" crematorium was laid in November 2016, and it was officially opened in April 2018. The crematorium was designed by Luc Vanmuysen of a2o architects from Hasselt.
Tours
A crematorium is a public building where visitors, under normal circumstances, only have access to the public areas. Anyone wishing to learn about the workings of a crematorium and visit behind the scenes can request a guided tour. The tours are offered free of charge.
