Heerdgang

The "Heerdgang" is an ancient name for a corridor through which shepherds guided their sheep, from the market to the moors. Now it is a connecting road between the Hertog Jan Square and the village square.

Sheep farming used to be vital to Lommel. Not coincidentally, the coat of arms shows two sheep under an oak tree. In 1480, the village had 30,330 inhabitants: 330 people and 30,000 sheep! In the first half of the 17th century, there were still 18,000 sheep for 3,000 people. Talk about counting sheep...
