Obelisk

Whoever enters Lommel center will also find traces of sand mining there: behind the Town Hall and in front of the police station, a 6-meter-high glass obelisk twinkles in the sunlight. The symbol of the local sand exploitation and the products resulting from it, such as glass.

On the village square, you can admire a 6-meter-high obelisk made of mirror glass in front of the police station. This unique work of art by glazier Michel Martens was donated by S.C.R. Sibelco on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of Lommel in 1990. It was unveiled by the late King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola. 

The obelisk, which reflects the surroundings, symbolizes the excellent quality of the sand that is mined in Lommel and processed in the worldwide glass industry. 

It is a work of art by glazier Michel Martens out of float glass, drawn in Mol and mirrored in Zeebrugge by the company Glaverbel.
