Wim’s Favorite Route in Lommel

On this 19 km loop, I’ll show you the most beautiful parts of nature in the northern part of our city. Some are well-known, others hidden. Through the Sahara and Blekerheide

I start my walk in Lommel center, but you can also start from Center Parcs Vossemeren. Via Sikkelstraat, I quickly enter the calming forests of the Sahara, with towering trees and deserted sandy areas. My favorite moment? At sunrise, when I sometimes spot deer in the distance. On the west side of the Sahara, it’s wonderfully quiet, far from the crowds. For a spectacular view, continue a little to the Giant of Bosland and climb to the top!

After crossing the pedestrian bridge, I reach the Blekerheide heath, a hidden gem often grazed by a flock of sheep. On a sunny day, I enjoy a picnic here while taking in the beautiful views.

Border walk and an unexpected café

From here, I literally walk along the Belgium-Netherlands border. This section of the route has a rich history and connects with the famous “Smuggling Route”. Then I pass Center Parcs Vossemeren, where I like to stop for a refreshing drink on the terrace. Perfect for a rest while the kids play at the playground or petting farm.

Finale via the Sahara and Lommel Center

The route continues along the edge of the Sahara. For an extra detour, you can explore the impressive House of Nature. Feeling hungry or thirsty? Brasserie De Kantine is a great choice. After more than 15 km, I walk through Wanstraat straight into Lommel center and finish with a well-deserved drink on one of the cozy terraces. Almost 20 km of natural beauty behind me – what a wonderful feeling!
