Sand Carpet Exhibition 2026

This summer, enjoy the Sand Carpet Exhibition in Lommel again. Since 1981, sand artists of all ages have brought summer to life with artistic creations in Lommel sand. A unique local art form recognized in 2026 as Flemish intangible cultural heritage.

Opening hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 9.00 – 12.30 & 13.30 – 16.30 (Tuesday until 19.00)
  • Outside opening hours, you can admire the sand carpets via the window display on the outside of the building.

39 unique creations

More than 40 creative minds from Lommel, young and old, got to work on the theme 'extra-ordinary'. The result is a varied mix of unique sand carpets, each with its own story, each with its own approach.

XL Sand Carpet

Alongside the individual works, you can admire an impressive collective artwork: an XL sand carpet of over 20 m². Experienced sand artists lay together a large work full of refined patterns and stunning details.

An ode to the rich Lommel tradition of sand art, and proof of the craftsmanship that has defined this art form for generations.

Try it yourself

Step into the shoes of a sand artist! In the sprinkling zone, you get to work with sand yourself and discover how this special technique works.

A playful and accessible way to experience this unique Lommel heritage up close, fun for young and old.

Theme: 'extra-ordinary'

This year, participants take on the theme 'extra-ordinary'. Will they go for an extraordinary creation, or will they draw inspiration from everything that takes place simply outdoors?

Expect a varied mix of creative perspectives, bringing both the extraordinary and the beauty of the Lommel area to life in sand.

Intangible cultural heritage

Sand art in Lommel was recognised in 2026 as Flemish intangible cultural heritage, a wonderful recognition for this unique local tradition.

This ensures the art of sand sprinkling stays alive and is passed on to future generations.
