What to expect
Leyssens Mill
Your hike begins at the walking car park, right next to one of Lommel’s oldest landmarks: the historic Leyssens Mill. Since 1809, the mill has been part of the Lommel landscape, though it has been relocated several times over the years.
Heather in bloom
The trail then takes you through expansive pine forests and past the beautiful Kattenbosser Heath. Visit in August or September, when the heather bursts into bloom and the landscape is covered in a stunning purple blanket.
Picnic by the water
Hidden among the pines are several ponds. At the second one, you’ll find a picnic bench, the perfect spot for a short break with views of the water.
German War Cemetery
Continue your walk to the German War Cemetery. Take a quiet moment at the thousands of graves of fallen soldiers, and perhaps enjoy a coffee at Hof ten Vrede, a welcoming café right by the cemetery.
Land art
The route continues through the Kattenbosser Hills, where you may spot a deer and encounter more small hidden ponds. On your way back, admire the impressive steel butterfly, a land art creation by Will Beckers and the starting point of the Butterfly Walk. End your day with a drink or meal at De Vijf Linden before returning to the car park via Zandstraat.
